GIVE YOURSELF A CALL

Many years ago, long before everyone had a cell phone, a young teenager went into a store and asked to use the telephone. The clerk happily agreed and pushed the phone over to the young boy. It was not too difficult to listen in on the conversation: “Hello, Dr. Anderson. How are you today? Good. I am calling to see if you would like to hire a boy to cut the grass and run errands for you? (Pause) Oh, you already have someone working for you? Well, are you completely satisfied with the work he is doing? If not, I would be glad to talk to you further. OK then, goodbye doctor. Thanks for talking to me.”

As the boy was leaving the store, he thanked the clerk, who said, “Just a minute, son. If you are looking for work, I could use a boy like you.”

“Thank you very much, sir,” the boy replied. “But I already have a job.”

The clerk didn’t understand. “But didn’t I just hear you ask Dr. Anderson if he needed someone to work for him?”

“No, sir,” said the boy. “You see, I am the boy who is working for Dr. Anderson. I was just calling to check up on myself.”

One of the many benefits that come our way as a result of being part of the Body of Christ is the fellowship we have with each other. It’s when we are together, in good times as well as the difficult, that we are able to check up on each other, help and encourage one another, and bear burdens together. Prov 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” (NIV)

Give yourself a call. Check up on yourself. See how you are doing. You need us and we need you.

That’s my view of things this week.
